In warmer climates and over a period of years, the Chinese Fan Palm grows into a handsome, medium-sized palm tree with a slender trunk. The common name is something of a misnomer since it is actually native to Japan's Ryukyu Islands and Volcano Islands. The broad, lime green leaves have elegantly drooping and curled tips, which gives rise to its other name, "Fountain palm." The fruits, which are produced in large numbers, are blue. Livistona chinensis shows a good tolerance to cold and frost and may be used in the sheltered temperate garden, but will also happily accept hot and humid tropical conditions.
The Chinese Fan Palm is a relatively slow growing palm and typically adds a foot of trunk or less in a year. The palm grows faster when the soil is rich and moist most of the time. The fronds stretch when in shade and are much shorter when the palm is grown in full sun. The Chinese Fan Palm will look almost like a different palm in shade versus full sun. Either way, the Chinese Fan Palm is a great looking palm in the landscape.
A Quality Plant has many sizes to choose from from container grown to filed grown over 30 feet tall.
